After the failure of the war of 1870, it was decided to strengthen the eastern border by surrounding the main strongholds with a belt of forts. This was the case in Toul, the wall losing its offensive role to become a defensive place. The Porte de France was rebuilt in 1882-1883, wider than it had been before. Today, the Porte de France welcomes, through the garden of Hamm, a lush vegetation composed of bamboo and other perennial plants, complemented by spring and summer flowers, like the plantings implemented throughout the city. For the 30th anniversary of the twinning between Toul and Hamm-Mitte (Germany), the elephant symbol of Hamm, was presented to the City of Toul. The pachyderm, decorated by high school girls, features the coats of arms of the two cities on its sides, as well as the Toul vineyards and the glass and steel elephant from Maximilian Park in Hamm.
