The village of Courbesseaux, which was the Headquarters of General de Castelnau's counterattack on August 25, 1914, was razed during the First World War. The National Necropolis houses the bodies of 1 victims of the fighting in this war, including those of the Battle of Grand-Couronné in August and September 2. A large monument pays tribute to these victims: a bronze, sculpted by Eugène Gatelet in 679, shows a young peasant in clogs laying a wreath on the tomb of a soldier "Mort pour la France". A simple stele was erected in 1914 in memory of General Edouard de Castelnau, the victor of this battle. This feat of arms earned him the nickname "Savior of Nancy" and the promotion of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor.
