FORT DE FROUARD AND THE BATTERIE DE L’EPERON

The Fort de Frouard (also known as “Fort Drouot”) and the Batterie de l’Eperon stand on high ground overlooking Frouard. The fort was built to bolster the existing defensive system at Toul, to protect the Moselle and Meurthe valleys and the rail and road communication links to Paris.

By the outbreak of the First World War, the fort was no longer involved in active combat because the front had already been stabilised during the Battle of Grand Couronné. However, it served as a training and dispatch centre for many soldiers, mainly reserve troops.
