The Vallon de Bellefontaine covers an area of 346 hectares on the outskirts of the Nancy conurbation. The site is known for the quality of its environment and its diverse forest ecosystems, complete with springs, streams, artificial lakes and wetlands. The Meurthe-et-Moselle Departmental Council purchased the bottom of the valley in 2002 and is gradually enhancing the landscape through comprehensive management and public developments
The site was listed as a protected area (Zone Naturelle d'Intérêt Ecologique Faunistique et Floristique) in the 1980s.
It hosts a number of public events and group and individual excursions can be organised through the sensitive natural environment (e.g. outdoor leisure centres, ramblers). These excursions are a great way to explore this rich and varied area of local importance.
The site also runs educational programmes for school children – from nursery school through to secondary school. There are also themed days held at the Cité des Paysages and the surrounding area.
