A few kilometers south of Nancy, in Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, stands a 16th-century basilica. A flamboyant Gothic-style building that has attracted pilgrims and visitors for centuries.
The origins of the Basilica of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port are linked to René II, Duke of Lorraine. He commissioned its construction after his victory over Charles the Bold at the Battle of Nancy on January 5, 1477. It was also on this occasion that Saint Nicholas was declared the patron saint of Lorraine.
This basilica, with its sober architecture, has imposing dimensions: a vaulted ceiling of 30,35 meters, columns 21,50 meters high, and a north tower that rises to 87 meters. Its façade is also the third largest in France. Inside, there are 3 windows decorated with stained glass and a treasury, where a relic of Saint Nicholas is kept.
From 1983 to 2005, the Basilica of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port was restored thanks to the posthumous bequest of Camille Croué-Friedman, a donor from the town who emigrated to the United States at the beginning of the XNUMXth century.
