The story of the authentic Liverdun madeleines begins in the early 20th century when baker Joseph Rouvenacht, assisted by his apprentice Marcel Chenel, took advantage of the influx of Nancy residents seeking to enjoy the banks of the Moselle River in Liverdun to launch these famous biscuits. They achieved national renown in 1927 during the Lorraine gastronomic festival in Paris. After the war, André and Pierre Chenel, Marcel's sons, continued to develop the business, distributing them throughout eastern France. In addition to the Liverdun shop, a second shop was opened in 2025 in Nancy, at 57 rue des Dominicains. The Nancy shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
