The wayside cross next to the Saizerais viewpoint is called the Barnard Cross; this was a mistake when the cross was named. A marker on the cross indicates the elevation: 264 meters. The General Levelling of France (NGF) is a vertical reference network consisting of more than 350,000 levelling benchmarks whose altitude is precisely determined. These benchmarks are, for the most part, small metal markers about ten centimeters in diameter, sealed into walls or structures (National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information). During the French Revolution, objects and other items related to religion were removed, but Louis XVIII re-evangelized the country, and the cross was installed at that time. The Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) passes just behind the viewpoint; pilgrims passing through Saizerais can stop there and continue along the route to Liverdun.
