Built in 1783 in the north of the city, extending from Cours Léopold, its name commemorates a lieutenant who died of his wounds while attempting to prevent a clash on August 31, 1790, between troops sent by the National Assembly and mutineers from three local regiments. The gate was originally dedicated to the soldiers from Lorraine who died in the American Revolutionary War, making it the oldest war memorial in France. It later became a memorial space, honoring the people of Nancy who died in combat. Its sculpted decoration evokes various wars, including the Battle of Nancy in 1477.
