Garden of
government palace

The Government Palace, located on Place de la Carrière, was built by Emmanuel Héré in the 18th century at the request of King Stanislas to house the Intendant of France. This garden was commissioned by Stanislas, Duke of Lorraine, and was intended for the Intendant of France, the administrator of the Duchy during Stanislas's reign. The army later took possession of the site before this heritage property reverted to the City of Nancy. Since 1983, the Government Palace has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 8800 square meters of the garden feature maple trees and two plane trees that were contemporary with Stanislas. These plane trees were purchased and planted when the Palace was built, making them over 250 years old. They were designated as remarkable trees by the ARBRES association in 2013 during the first edition of Embranchements. The garden's layout is harmonious, with a circular shape that naturally lends itself to calm and serenity. It is more of a haven of peace, compared to the bustle of the neighboring Pépinière park. The garden provides direct access to Rue Jacquot and the former Gendarmerie barracks, built in 1872 in an 18th-century style. It will now be possible to stroll from the Cordeliers to the garden of the Government Palace and then to the Pépinière. Visitors can enter from the Pépinière or from Rue Jacquot. Some notable plants include the horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), purple beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea'), Norway maple (Fraxinus excelsior), field ash (Ulmus minor), large-leaved lime (Tilia platyphyllos), and London plane (Platanus x acerifolia). This garden will be open every day at the same times as the Pépinière Park: 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. from April 1st to June 30th; 6:30 a.m. to midnight from July 1st to October 31st; 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from November 1st to March 31st.
